How To Guides for Voting
Quick Voter Links
Georgia makes voting easy. You can vote in Early Voting by Absentee or on Election Day.
You must present a government-issued photo identification every time you vote in person and the first time you vote by absentee ballot.
Visit the Georgia Voter Identification Requirements page for more information regarding acceptable forms of identification.
To vote, you first must send an application to register to your county elections office which will determine your eligibility. You can do it online, download a form to return or do it at various government agencies. Learn more on the How-to Guide: Registering to Vote page.

Georgia’s voting machines have accommodations for various disabilities and poll workers are trained to help however needed. Plus, read guidelines on assistance from someone of your choice. Visit the Voting Assistance for People with Disabilities page to learn more.
Visit the Military and Overseas Voting page to read specific rules and arrangements for voters who live overseas or are serving outside of Georgia in the military and their families.
You are considered an active voter if you are registered to vote in Georgia and have stayed in contact with the election system in the last five years by voting, requesting an absentee ballot, signing a petition, or updating your address either through the Department of Driver Services or directly with your local elections office.
You can still vote, request an absentee ballot, or sign a petition as usual if your voting status is Inactive.
Inactive Status means you have not had contact with elections officials for five (5) years. Once you are Inactive, after two general elections with no contact, you will receive notice that your registration will be cancelled.
To change your status, simply vote, request an absentee ballot, sign a petition, or update your address. You can do that or check your status online.
If anyone files a challenge to your eligibility, it’s up to whoever makes the challenge to present proof to your county’s election board that you’re not eligible based on your age, citizenship, residency, competency, or felony conviction. The board will notify you if it is scheduling a hearing to see the evidence and hear from witnesses.
If the board rules you are no longer eligible to vote, it will send you notification. You can appeal the decision to your county’s superior court within 10 days.
State law requires the public availability of voter lists including names and address of registered voters. In 2009, the Georgia Legislature enacted a bill known as the VoteSafe program to provide for the confidentiality of residence addresses of certain registered voters who have been, or may be, subject to acts of family violence or stalking or currently reside in a family violence shelter.
Visit the VoteSafe page for more information.
